A R Orage was truly one of the most remarkable and unusual figures in the early 20th Century. Beginning his public life as some form of a socialist, his independence and integrity brought him to oppose both the Fabians and the Labour Party. The journal he owned, The New Age, which was partly financed by George Bernard Shaw, came to advocate a form of guild socialism (which had roots in medievalism). It was also probably the leading cultural and literary commentator in the intellectual life of the UK at that time. This Part I precedes the time in which he met Douglas and defected to Social Credit. The fat really hits the fire next month with Part II.
